“…some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality…we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.” H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu”

Lovecraft’s introduction to his classic tale sums up my perspective on speculative fiction: we use stories of imagined worlds to explore our position within reality, or to distract ourselves from the truth, which would really do a number on our minds. Vistas of Reality is a space where I review and discuss science fiction and fantasy, both current and classic, in film and print. I also discuss storytelling, writing technique, and give updates on my own work.

The lands of The Last Omen: anarchy to the south in Nemerev, a ruthless empire to the north in Habia, with Marathea stuck between, as the last to show respect to fate.

I write epic fantasy novels, exploring the dark side of humanity in ritualistic cultures. I take my inspiration from history and classic literature like Shakespeare and Homer. I am currently seeking an agent for my novel The Last Omen, a tale of a kingdom besieged by pirates, rebellion, and sorcery, and the woman trying to hold it together while madness destroys her husband’s rule.

Human characters, epic trouble, inside and outside.

I also write short stories, some of which you can read for free.  If you like stories about tough ladies, you might like “Talons of the Sun.”  If ghosts are your thing, check out “Stages of Man.”

I live in the Colorado Front Range and enjoy getting together with other writers and artists. I also play 5-string banjo and guitar, and you can often find me at bluegrass jam sessions.  For the latest news, and writing tips satirical and sincere, follow me on Twitter @JoelJAdamson or like my Facebook page.  Please feel free to contact me about local collaborations or if you’re in desperate need of a very literate banjo picker.30725252_427303854379404_8242297709973733376_n
