Yesterday I had an appendectomy and today I decided to finally launch this new blog. I hope you enjoy it.
This is not the first posting on this new blog. I had delayed starting this blog for a long time for various stupid reasons: “I haven’t published anything yet,” “blogs are stupid,” “I’m stupid,” etc. I think only the last one is true. I had an appendectomy (surprise!) and got home from the hospital last night, and this morning I came up with a great idea for how to write the story that I’d wanted to write for a long time. I noticed a parallel between a conversation about the film Event Horizon and a line in the film itself, and how it epitomized my graduate school experience. I had wanted to write about grad school and how it didn’t work out for a long time, and this clinched it for me.
Refusing to launch this site was just procrastination. I worried for a long time about alienating the people in grad school. They’re either already alienated or I don’t mind alienating them if they’re going to be alienated by having me tell the truth. We all made mistakes and I think they already know the mistakes they made. Anyway, another reason to start this blog was to not dwell in the past, but to focus on what I’m doing now (not limited to getting portions of my digestive tract amputated).
What I’m doing now and what this blog is for
This blog is for keeping people updated, and for discussing what I’m reading.
This blog is for keeping people updated, and for discussing what I’m reading. When I publish anything, I will let you know. I like writing about the books I read, so I will write occasional posts about that. I might occasionally discuss writing technique, but I don’t think it’s my place to dispense advice. I sometimes see people do this, even in a compelling way, only to find out they haven’t published anything. If that’s not disingenuous, it’s a little confusing.
If you want to read my other blogs, check out Sex, Math and Programming, or my science blog Sexual Selection and Life-history Evolution. They have had some popular posts, but they don’t really reflect what I’m doing anymore, so they’re done.
Another thing I’ll do is post children’s stories based on bedtime stories I tell my kids. Those will be free, and might include some illustrations. I also think I’ll post some results of writing exercises, sketches or other experiments.
